While I did both a Salkantay overnight trek and a week-long program going throughout... read more the Sacred Valley and ending at Machu Picchu, my separate three day experience with the people from the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development (AASD) in Calca was a clear highlight of the trip!
With AASD, one gets to step away from the tourist mayhem and mechanistic impersonality of many of the Sacred Valley offerings, and actually step into an *AUTHENTIC* Andean farming experience in partnership with the people of the Andean region. Through AASD, I was able to better understand the current realities of the Andean farmers and how progress is being made to address the changing realities of the times due to climate change, big corporate farming, etc. One of the most impactful things I took away from my time with AASD was a deep appreciation and respect for the traditions, culture, and ingenuity of the Andean people that have been passed down and honed over hundreds of years.
